The original genre for my piece was a creativing writing piece called "Dark Matter." It’s purpose was to capture what we lose when we black out from the perspective of a college freshman who is new to drinking and blacks out for the first time. The original audience was peers in my creative writing class and my teacher, as well as friends of mine I wanted to share with.

For my re-purposed piece, the genre I decided to use is more of a journalistic style piece to the tune of the New Yorker. It’s purpose is to try to explain why college kids drink to excess when we perfectly know its dangers and consequences. I tie in my personal story for dramatic effect. My intended audience would be readers of the New Yorker or Michigan Daily, but especially college students, of whom I am directly speaking about.

My biggest challenges were how to write about this concept without saying things that have already been said. I want to add to the conversation on binge drinking in college and don’t know if I’m just saying what everyone already knows and doesn’t want to hear. This has been difficult for me to maintain because of the large amount of literature already existing on such a topic. I’d like to think my insights and opinions are something new and worthy of reading.

The final draft is below.
