Capstone Project:

A Sports Illustrated Magazine Piece

I could not have been more delighted to embark on this project in the Capstone course. From the initial planning stages that included the project proposal and project production plan, to the drafting and workshopping process, I never at any time felt overwhelmed or disinterested in the work. This in part was due to my deep desire to investigate this topic. Additionally, having a tremendous love for sports and all of the form its takes provided ample motivation to execute the project process.

Sports is written about from so many different angles because it is so multi-faceted. I wanted to develop a perspective that included a variety of narrative approaches across the spectrum of the sports world. My focus was obviously college sports since I am a college student. To broaden the field to more professional or international sports topics would stand to be too overwhelming.

With the scope I did provide, I feel extremely proud and happy of the completed project. With my experience in Adobe InDesign, I had the freedom to do what ever I wanted with the Sports Illustrated style in mind. My hope is that through reading my piece, you can begin to think about your own relationship to sports, and like I did, better understand the many competing and conflicting tensions that exist within them. Enjoy!
