Hello, and welcome to my capstone portfolio for the Sweetland Minor in Writing program at the University of Michigan. I'm Gabriella Ring, a Winter 2015 graduate in the International Studies program through the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. Halfway through my undergraduate career I became enveloped into the world of sports through two men I met on a cruise out of New Orleans. Devout LSU Tigers football fans, they helped explain to me the culture of football in the South and Southeastern Conference. I learned that the regionalism of sport was something exciting and evolving. Comparing our respective experience with being sports fans from SEC and Big Ten country opened a new perspective for me. I began to watch SportsCenter more often and follow sports as more than just a casual fan. I became a sports fanatic.

My love of sports combined with my love of writing allowed me to produced some of the best writing I've completed at Michigan. Many of those pieces are featured in this portfolio. The 'Sporty Writing' page explains why I write about sports, while the 'Syntax of Sports' details experiences and pieces I completed for my favorite class at Michigan.

The 'Other Sporty Writing' page introduces a few essays I wrote last term during LSA's theme semester 'Sport and the University' where I was in English 242, "Twenty Two Ways to Think About Sport," as well as Education 212, "The History of Intercollegiate Athletics," both with Professor John U. Bacon. The 'Other Writing' page features multimodal compositions I have completed in the form of magazine covers and a complication of my creative writing class's work.

Finally, the 'Capstone Project' page showcases my Sports Illustrated -styled magazine piece (Passion, Pitfalls, and the Pursuit of Excellence) that seeks to explain why we care so much about sport. If you were to read only one piece from beginning to end in my entire porfolio, this would be it!  It was a pleasure to work on and develop throughout the semester, and I hope you will enjoy it.

Outside of sports, my next greatest passion is that of traveling and experiencing new places. My favorite mode of traveling is cruising, where life on board exists as a mini-community from people all over the country. I've been on six so far that have taken me to many islands of the Caribbean as well as Bermuda and cities along the East Coast. Cruising is especially relaxing and joyous, and I cherish the many memories I create with passengers onboard. However, coming home is inevitable and necessary, where I get to work on exciting endeavours such as this portfolio you are about to read.

How I See Myself as a Writer

The buttons to the left link to the reflective writing pieces I have done in the Minor, both at the beginning in Writing 220 and at the end in Writing 420. While the prompts are similar, exploring why I write and how my writing has evolved throughout the Minor and college, my responses are not. Written a year a part, these two essays do an interesting job of putting the Minor into context and demonstrating how I can write just about anything if I am passionate enough.
