Magazine Cover, Winter 2014

Not letting my passion for succinct magazine covers fall by the wayside, I elected to create a cover for the Syntax of Sports magazine Mr. Barry was compiling of the class's best work. We each submitted our favorite, revised paper for the class "magazine." I chose this image of the Jadeveon "Clowney hit" on Michigan running back Vincent Smith in the 2013 Outback Bowl.

Before our class began, Mr. Barry blasted out a CTools announcement with the actual video as our first homework assignment. It was our first lesson of the course---the importance of the force of focus. There's a difference between the "Americans won" and the "Soviets lost" when describing the same event hockey game at the 1980 Winter Olympics. For us, it was the "Miracle on Ice." For the Soviets, it was just a bad defeat. While I thought how awesome it was I was watching a football play for my first "assignment" in an English class, the lesson would frame everything we talked about throughout the term, as well as the discussion of form and function in writing.

Class Compilation, Winter 2012

As part of the University's Creative Expressions requirement, I elected to take English 223: Creative Writing, second semester of my freshman year. This class was the first time I was able to let my creative imagination run wild, and also be exp0sed to the writings of upperclassmen through peer review.

This cover stemmed out of my desire to create a class magazine where everyone submitted either a poem or short story that had been workshopped by the class. I wanted a momento to mark the class and semester, which further advanced my writing by allowing  me to not be afraid to break standard writing conventions. Inside the 'magazine,' I feature a short 'Letter from the Editor' that introduces the magazine to the audience of the class. I also stylized the poem pages to a format used at my high school's newspaper when I was on staff, and created section dividers for the poetry and fiction section that I thought creatively added to the flow of the compilation. The entire document took many hours to put together, but I was very happy with my ability to produce an impressive class publication. Click on the cover to download and browse.
